SINN Féin Councillor Michael Rice has welcomed confirmation that the PARS Extension Programme will continue in Kilkeel following concerns raised by local service users that the programme was being withdrawn.
’I am delighted that, following representations I made on behalf of local service users, the Council has confirmed that the PARS Extension Programme will continue operating from Kilkeel Bowling Pavilion.
‘Several participants had contacted me expressing their disappointment and concern that the programme was being withdrawn, particularly at a time when opportunities for physical activity in Kilkeel are already limited due to the ongoing refurbishment of the Leisure Centre.
‘The PARS programme provides an invaluable service to local people, helping them improve their physical fitness, confidence and overall wellbeing.
‘It is important that participants have the opportunity to build upon the progress they have made rather than seeing that progress interrupted.
‘I welcome the Council's decision to ensure that those completing the current programme can continue through the PARS Extension Programme alongside the next group of participants.
‘This is a positive outcome and demonstrates the importance of listening to local service users and acting upon their concerns.
‘I want to thank those who brought this matter to my attention and the Council officers who engaged constructively to ensure the continuation of this important service.
‘While Kilkeel Leisure Centre remains closed, it is vital that we continue to protect and maintain opportunities for local people to remain active, particularly those who benefit most from these programmes.
‘I will continue to work to ensure that local residents have access to the leisure and wellbeing services they deserve.
