Newry, Mourne and Down District Council begins improvement works at Newcastle's Donard Park

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is investing in improvement works at Newcastle's Donard Park, including new automated barriers and bollards, and 13 new streetlights.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council is to begin a programme of improvement works at
Newcastle’s Donard Park in early November 2026.
The investment includes new automated barriers and bollards, the installation of 13 streetlights,
new and upgraded fencing, pathway improvements, works to the main entrance and traffic
island, and associated electrical, surfacing and landscaping works.
Works will take place across Donard Park, but the park and main car park will remain open
throughout this time. Minor, temporary disruption is expected around the arched entrance from
Bryansford Road. From early December, parts of the overflow car park will be closed, with
temporary traffic management in place for works at the main entrance and traffic island.
The Council is asking park visitors to take care during the works and follow temporary signage
and traffic management arrangements. The work is scheduled to be completed by Tuesday, 15
December.
The Council has been working with residents, elected representatives, the PSNI and local
business owners to identify opportunities to improve Donard Park. Feedback from these
discussions has helped shape a programme focused on access, safety, infrastructure and the
overall visitor experience.
The new automated barriers will support the management of vehicle access to the park while
ensuring residents can continue to access their homes via the main car park. The works do not
involve the introduction of parking charges.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Glyn Hanna said: “These
improvements are a welcome investment in Donard Park and will benefit residents, businesses
and visitors. The programme is designed to improve the safety, infrastructure and overall visitor
experience at Donard Park, while supporting the effective management of the site.
“The improvements have been informed by engagement with residents, elected
representatives, the PSNI and local businesses and demonstrate our commitment to the
ongoing improvement of one of our most valued community assets.”
Cllr Hanna added: “We appreciate everyone’s cooperation while the works are underway and
ask visitors to follow temporary signage and traffic management arrangements. I look forward
to seeing the completed improvements and encourage everyone to take extra care while work
is taking place.”
