Cllr Lewis welcomes clearer Christmas bin collection system for Slieve Croob residents

A new system of route-specific stickers will be rolled out over the coming weeks, clearly advising individual households of their Christmas collection arrangements, according to DUP councillor Cllr Alan Lewis.
SLIEVE Croob DUP Cllr Alan Lewis has welcomed plans for a new route-specific system to help prevent confusion over Christmas bin collections across the DEA.
Cllr Lewis said: “Slieve Croob is unusual in that residents’ bins are collected from both the Newry and Downpatrick depots. For people living in the middle of the district, it is not always obvious which depot or collection schedule applies to their home.
“I raised this issue last year after a number of residents experienced difficulties over the Christmas period. People were working from the information and messaging issued by Council, but in my view that information was not clear enough for households whose collections did not necessarily follow the area they assumed they were in.
“As a result, some residents were left in the unfair position of missing collections despite trying to follow the Council’s own guidance. At Christmas, when households naturally have additional waste, that can cause considerable frustration.
Last Christmas o had highlighted this concerns and again this year have raised those concerns again with officers at the Sustainability and Environment Committee and officers have now advised that my comments have been taken on board.
“A new system of route-specific stickers will be rolled out over the coming weeks, clearly advising individual households of their Christmas collection arrangements.
“Waste collection is one of the most basic services Council provides. Residents pay their rates and rightly expect clear information and a reliable service.
“This new approach should remove much of the uncertainty we saw last year and help ensure residents know exactly when their bins are due to be collected over the Christmas period.”
